Girona
Girona is a major Catalan city located in the northeastern part of Barcelona. It is known for its medieval architecture and the Roman remains of a fortress. It is a popular day trip from Barcelona. I also considered visiting the Salvador Dalí museum, which is located in a nearby city named Figueres, but couldn’t do so due to time constraints.
When I reached the city at around 5 PM it was already starting to get dark. I hurriedly made my way to the Girona Cathedral.
In the morning it had rained in Girona, and the air was very calm.
There were many flower shops in the street and the city had a very pleasant aroma.
I also went to an old city corner which had a very antique feeling. The streets were mostly deserted.
After a 20 minutes walk I arrived at a narrow alley which led up to the church.
The church was located at a higher ground and gave a nice view of the city.
The cathedral itself was grand and beautiful, with its walls made out of beautiful marble stones. During the Moorish rule of Spain, this church used to be a mosque.
A long staircase led up to the enormous doors, where the shooting of the Game of Thrones series took place.
The were numerous historical sites around the church, but I couldn’t visit them as it was now almost dark.
The Arab baths was another popular tourist attraction. I could hear someone playing a violin in the rooms above.
I now made my way to the city outskirts where the Girona Walls stand. These walls were made during the 9th century but were restored during later times. Had I arrived a few hours earlier, they would have made for a spectacular view of the city.
The streets were narrow and there were unexpected slopes.
I now headed back to the train station and made a few stops along the beautifully decorated Christmas market.
The Christmas lights in Girona were absolutely stunning.
It was now 7:15 PM and I took my train back to Barcelona. During the return journey the train took a different route and made numerous stops. I arrived back in Barcelona around 10 PM and departed for Valencia the next morning.
